What were you looking for in 2024?
According to Google’s Year in Search report, the world was surfing the web for news about the US election, the latest iPhone releases, blockbuster movie releases, TikTok trends and style tips.
The results, Google told TechCrunch, aren’t just the most popular searches — which would be, for example, weather — but rather a list of people, places and things that became more popular this year or “had an increase in large in traffic over a sustained period in 2024 compared to 2023.”
Globally, coverage of sporting events topped the search, with the Copa América taking first place, followed by the UEFA European Championship and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Liam Payne, the singer and former member of One Direction who died this year was fifth on the list, followed by President-elect Donald Trump and information about the new iPhone 16, which was launched this fall. The 2024 Paris Olympics and information about Catherine, Princess of Wales, were also among the top searches worldwide.
In the US, election news, the New York Times’ Connections and Yankees game were among the most searched terms of the year across the board.
When broken down into subcategories, Americans searched for Trump more than Harris, JD Vance and President Joe Biden, and in celebrity death searches, users searched for news of the death of Toby Keith, who died this year after fighting with cancer, more than any other.
Diddy, the rapper facing blackmail and sex-trafficking charges, was No. 1 most sought-after musician in the world, but dropped to second place behind Usher in the US.
Across the globe, the most-searched TV series was the Netflix hit “Baby Reindeer,” while “Inside Out 2,” released this summer, was the most-searched movie both globally and in the US. Domestically, it was followed by Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, It Ends with Us and Saltburn.
It was also the year of the martini, as the Porn Star Martini—followed by the US Open Honey Deuce and the viral Hugo spritz—took the top spot for the country’s most requested cocktail, while the dirty martini came in fifth, the lychee martini. took the six point lemon martini fell to ninth place.
Meanwhile, trendsetting Americans sought out the viral “crowd woman aesthetic”—marked by mini skirts, oversized fur coats, and voluminous hair—more than any other. “Brat” landed in fourth place in the list of “aesthetic” style, while “office siren” in seventh place.
Fashion users also asked for “back in style” fashions that saw a resurgence in 2024, “are skinny jeans back in style?” being the most asked question as flattering denim was revived by Gen Zers this year.
