Bravo’s newest real estate reality series “For Sale in SLC” is set to lift the lid on the bustling housing market in the Mormon mecca of Salt Lake City, UT — but it will also debut an eye-catching local design trend that will leave homeowners everywhere desperate. add it to their properties: costco door.
Before the show in December. Episode 4 premiere, Sold on SLC stars Matt Jones and Kenny Sperry break the trend, showing Realtor.com® why the Costco door has become a must-have design upgrade for their customers.
The Costco door, they explained, is a direct opening between a home’s garage and pantry, which makes unloading and storing groceries much easier and faster after the homeowner returns from the grocery store.
Although the concept may seem simple, Jones and Sperry say it has become a priority for many of their local customers, many of whom are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have large families seeking abundant food supplies.
However, Jones and Sperry note that functional design details are something every homeowner can benefit from and are just one of the interesting elements that make SLC housing inventory stand out.
How does a Costco door factor into the design and function of a home?
Jones: It is a 3 foot by 3 foot door that is in the garage. The way these builders build homes is that they like one of the walls in the garage to share a wall with the pantry—and pantries in Utah are not coat closets.
A good pantry in Utah is the size of a closet, so 15 feet by 20 feet by 8 feet. They want that ground-level door so that when a mom pulls into the garage, opens the back of her SUV, she can easily load it directly into the pantry without having to go through the house. That’s the concept: that door opens, you put everything in, and then you can go to the pantry and organize it.
Sperry: The Costco door [and] cold storage room [are not] something that’s really widely known outside of Utah, but it’s something that’s really a big deal because we’re LDS culture and all about food preservation.
Why is having ample food storage space so important to the Mormon community?
Jones: In the Mormon religion, there is a large part of the religion that teaches self-reliance. Part of this self-reliance is in the event of an emergency, loss of a job, or any of the scenarios where food distribution is interrupted, can you be self-reliant? When this is pushed through a religious organization, people get it.
How are your personal homes?
Sperry: I am a very big advocate when it comes to the real estate game. It’s a Monopoly game, and if you’ve played the board game, it’s not too far from real life. I own my home with a handful of rental properties that I rent out to other people.
My personal home, I grew up on a farm so space was a big factor. The biggest thing my wife and I were looking for when we bought this house specifically wasn’t everything we wanted in the house, [but] we had a very specific area we wanted to be in because of demographics and schools; and then we wanted something where we could stretch our legs a bit.
Finding that in a suburb, it is really difficult to find land properties. I think 0.17 [acres] is the average, less than a quarter of an acre at the moment. We are on a little over half an acre. We have a few chickens and animals and our house is only about 4000 square feet.
Jones: My wife and I bought the house I live in now exactly 10 years ago. it [was] built in 1995. It’s in the foothills of some of the mountains here in Utah, so we have some really nice views. We don’t like that the road is on a hill, but it’s a trade-off when you have amazing views of the valley and the sunset every night.
We have remodeled 85% of our house because when we moved into it, it was almost original. The house is 30 years old, and we’ve put our touches on everything from the kitchen to what I call my cave in the basement. It’s a large room with no windows, so technically it’s not even a bedroom. It’s like a playroom cut-out theater room.
We love our home because we’ve had so many fingerprints on it, but it’s definitely not our forever home. [We’ve] we have two bathrooms that we are going to finish. One of them is being developed, and the other one we have not started. After that the house will be ready to market to a new new home owner who wants to raise their family there like we did.
Season 1 of Bravo’s “Sold on SLC” premieres in December. 4 to 9 pm EST.
