The Manhattan penthouse that Hollywood legends Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward called their romantic retreat is now available, listed for $9.95 million, according to an announcement from the listing brokerage.
Located at the prestigious 1120 Fifth Ave. co-op, the property offers views of Central Park’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir and many Hollywood attractions.
It’s the first time in four decades that the air has gone public — and comes about 16 years after Newman’s death, according to the New York Times, which first reported news of the listing.
The couple’s daughters are handling the sale on behalf of their mother, Joanne Woodward, now 94, who has lived a quiet life in Westport, Connecticut, since being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2007.
Paul Newman, who died of cancer in 2008 aged 83, enjoyed his time staying at this pied-à-terre.
“They would spend weeks at a clip there. They would go to the theater or the opera or go out to dinner with friends,” Clea Newman Soderlund, their youngest daughter, told the Times.
She described the penthouse as “a really romantic place”.
Purchased in the early 1980s, the apartment spans nearly 3,000 square feet and occupies the top half of the 15-story limestone building, which dates back to 1925.
With two bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and two terraces of its own totaling 2,300 square feet, it’s an artist’s dream — and that’s exactly how the couple used it.
The terraces were perfect for cocktails and dinners, Clea said.
Guests included everyone from Tom Cruise to Cher, as well as Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. “It’s designed to be fun,” she said.
The apartment’s pre-war design remains intact, complete with nearly 11-foot ceilings, herringbone wood floors and a wood-burning fireplace.
“The bones are what’s really spectacular,” Noble Black, the Douglas Elliman broker representing the listing along with Jennifer Stillman, told the paper.
Updates to the apartment have been minimal since the Newmans bought it. They expanded the master bedroom by combining two smaller rooms, but much of the space still reflects the couple’s style from the 1980s.
“The kitchen is still very much as they had it,” Black added. “It also has the original wallpaper and tile – early 80s vintage.”
But for potential buyers looking to put their stamp on the space, Black said there’s good flexibility: “There’s a lot of room to play with.”
But that’s just inside. Outdoor space is another big benefit.
The penthouse’s west terrace, accessible from the living room and kitchen, overlooks Central Park, while the east-facing wraparound terrace offers stunning views of the cityscape.
“My mother wanted a terrace for the dogs, so they could go outside – that was the main objective,” said Clea. “They ended up getting this incredible property that overlooks the park and the reservoir, and they got the sunrise and the sunset.”
Inside, the master bedroom suite features two large closets, a hand-painted tile bath, and a soaking tub. The living room, which boasts a carved wooden mantel and a baby grand piano, was a favorite spot for the couple.
“They spent a lot of time there listening to music and enjoying the view,” Clea said.
The apartment also holds decades of memories for the Newmans’ daughters, who often joined their parents in town for family dinners and New Year’s Eve fireworks.
“We loved coming here,” Clea said. The building also housed another unit owned by the couple – a two-bedroom apartment on the first floor used as an office, gym and guest space. That unit is still owned by Woodward and is also available for purchase.
“My parents told us, ‘You’re welcome to come and visit anytime,’ but it wasn’t really meant to be there for long. It was their oasis in New York,” Clea said.
While most of the couple’s personal items, artwork and memorabilia have been removed or auctioned off, some items remain.
Newman and Woodward, both Oscar winners, were among the most famous actors of their time.
Newman won the Oscar for best actor for “The Color of Money,” while Woodward took home best actress for “The Three Faces of Eve.”
Beyond their on-screen successes, the couple were known for their philanthropy, with Newman founding the SeriousFun Children’s Network and Newman’s Own Foundation.
